Yoga Therapy
How does Yoga Therapy differ from group classes? Most Yoga classes offer stretching, strengthening and relaxation in a group setting and are catered to fairly healthy students.
Yoga Therapy is an emerging field that became protected by the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists) in 2016. The IAYT are now certifying therapists who fulfill the extensive requirements of education and experience. The education of a yoga therapist is significantly longer, more thorough and in-depth than of a yoga teacher and includes the understanding of common illnesses and conditions and how yoga can help those with a specific diagnosis. Yoga therapy is highly specialized and individualized. I will take all aspects of your life and history in account before designing a personalized practice that addresses your specific conditions and desired goals. Through reading body language, active listening and asking the right questions, I will continue to refine and adjust your practice to optimize the healing and transformative power of yoga. Through ongoing guidance I will not only help you to make the ancient yet powerful teachings applicable to your modern lifestyle but also to remain accountable and dedicated towards your desired goals. "Yoga helps to heal what can be healed and helps to accept what can not."
BKS Iyengar The process of Yoga Therapy |
Informed by a thorough interview and questionnaire, I will develop a practice for you that combines yoga postures, movement, breathing practices, stress reduction techniques and lifestyle recommendations. To enhance the effect of the practice I offer hands-on body work and Reiki. The goal will be to enable you to manage, reduce or eliminate symptoms and conditions while at the same time helping you to change your relationship and mental attitude towards them.
The practices will empower you to initiate change in your overall life-situation by working with all levels of your being: Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. You will learn to self-regulate: As you release tension from your body through postures and movement, you will also notice a calming effect on your mental and emotional states. And as you sooth your mind and nervous-system through breathing practices and learn to shift your attitude towards life, you will experience how your body in return relaxes.
Yoga therapy supports self-awareness not only of the body but also of mental patterns and habitual behaviors. Increased awareness will enable you to substitute self-limiting beliefs and unhealthy habits with more balanced and healthier ways of living.
The practices will support a greater understanding of your essence and your connection to the web of life. They will allow you to develop your personal expression of spirituality to increase your sense of meaning and purpose.
However, the success of yoga therapy depends on your own commitment to your healing. The process is so empowering because it teaches you to initiate the changes yourself. The greater your engagement and dedication the more you will experience the transformation power of yoga.
